Swedish Meatballs
This Swedish meatballs recipe has a special place in my family because it was my husband’s favorite birthday meal as he was growing up. It’s based on his Grandma’s original recipe, which is still handwritten and framed in his Mom’s kitchen. My version keeps that nostalgic, homemade feel with tender, warmly spiced meatballs and rich, creamy gravy that makes any dinner feel a little more special.

Recipe Highlights
Ready in just 30 minutes. Baking the meatballs while preparing the creamy gravy sauce keeps the process simple and makes this a practical comfort food option for busy weeknights.
Creamy homemade gravy. A buttery roux, beef broth, cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard come together to create a savory sauce that coats the meatballs.
Easy to customize. I’ve made these meatballs with different combinations of ground beef, pork, and venison. The recipe is also easy to adapt with gluten-free ingredients, making it a versatile option for all kinds of family dinners and gatherings. It can be served over mashed potatoes (my preference), rice, or noodles, or even just served as an appetizer.

Main Ingredients And Substitutions
This recipe doesn’t require anything fancy, just everyday fridge and pantry ingredients. Here are my notes about the main ingredients and what each one adds to this classic recipe:
For The Meatballs
- Ground beef and ground pork: This combination creates tender, flavorful meatballs with the right amount of richness. I’ve also made them with ground venison and ground turkey in the mix for a slightly different flavor. Any combination of beef, pork, venison, and/or turkey works as long as the total equals 2 pounds of ground meat.
- Panko breadcrumbs: Help keep the meatball mixture tender and act as a binder.
- Eggs: These help bind the meatballs as they bake.
- Onion: Be sure to mince it very finely. It adds savory flavor and moisture to help keep the meatballs tender.
- Seasonings: Garlic powder, nutmeg, and allspice give Swedish meatballs their signature warm, aromatic flavor.
For The Creamy Gravy
- Butter: Helps build flavor and gives a rich foundation to the creamy sauce.
- Flour: Creates the roux for a thick sauce that coats the meatballs.
- Beef broth: Adds savory flavor and body to the sauce.
- Heavy cream: Creates a smooth, velvety consistency in the cream sauce.
- Worcestershire sauce: Brings a tangy, savory flavor that balances the richness of the sauce. Use gluten-free Worcestershire sauce, tamari, or coconut aminos if needed.
- Dijon mustard: Adds a subtle sharpness that rounds out the flavor of the sauce.
